I didn’t get enough sleep last night.  Sometimes I just cant sleep and then the next day I feel like shit.  I feel exhausted and irritable and fragile and I cant summon up any enthusiasm for any of the things that I had been planning to do.   Some people seem to manage perfectly well with hardly any sleep, but if I don’t get my eight hours, I am a vegetable.  So I asked the angels if they can help.

A

Can we help?  Yes, we can!

Sleep, as you have noticed, is not something that is required in the same quantities by all people.  Some people can indeed manage very well with a few hours sleep, or even a series of naps.  The fact that you require more sleep than other people is something that needs to be respected, if you are to have peace of mind!  This business of comparing yourself to other people can only be frustrating for you, because as you may or may not have noticed, you are an entirely unique Being!

Can you  first of all accept that we need to dismiss all thoughts of what other people can or cannot do, if we are to make progress?

Me

That is not so easy for me to do, but I will give it a go!

A

Once you can make a commitment to both accepting and respecting your own body and mind, we can make significant progress.

The next thing to be done is to invite some pleasant thoughts and feelings to soothe your system.  You are saying that you feel ‘like shit’ and that you feel irritable and fragile?

Me

Yes.

A

It may seem pointless and it may seem silly, but may we ask you to just take a few minutes to imagine that you are feeling something completely different?  Perhaps even experiencing something different?  Can you imagine yourself in a scenario that would be truly pleasing for you right at this moment?

Me

Okay.  I am on holidays in Thailand.  I have just got up and it is a beautiful day.  I am lying on my hammock, in the shade, sipping  a watermelon juice and contemplating the glorious, empty beach and listening to the gentle sounds of the waves.  Maybe wondering about having a Thai massage…..

A

This sounds like an ideal scenario.  Can you place yourself firmly in this scene, imagining that you can truly feel the warmth of the sun and hear the sounds of the waves and take in what is happening with all of your senses?

Me

Okay, I did that for a while.

A

How do you feel now?

Me

Sleepy, but very, very relaxed.  It was lovely.

A

Did you notice anything in particular about how you felt during the experience?

Me

I was just totally relaxed, totally open.  I completely let go.  I felt very safe and peaceful.

A

Did you feel relaxed and safe and peaceful when you were trying to sleep last night?  Did you totally let go?

Me

No.  I was not relaxed.  My brain wouldn’t switch off.  I was thinking about all the things I have to do or want to do or should do.  Whatever.  I didn’t feel like I could relax.

A

Sleep disorders, from our experience stem mainly from anxiety and fear about what is happening or not happening  in one’s life.  The more you can let go of these anxieties and trust that what is happening is exactly perfect, the easier it will be for you to relax and to sleep.

While you are imagining yourself on a beach, you create a safe and relaxing experience with your mind, one in which you can let go and simply drink in all of the beauty that surrounds you.  It is possible for you to do this while you are not on a beach, also, as you have just demonstrated.  Can you see how it is your mind that is affecting your ability to relax?

Me

Of course I can see that.  It is just that there are times in my life when things don’t seem to be turning out quite how I want them to, and at those times I find it hard to let go of figuring out what to do!

A

Indeed.  We fully understand this.  What is needed at these times is for you to practice telling that part of you who is worried about your life that this worrying is all very well, but that taking time off from worrying will be of enormous benefit and cannot possibly be detrimental to the outcome, if you do it in short spurts, quite deliberately, such as you have just done.

Tell your mind it is just exactly like recharging the battery on your mobile phone, it is truly necessary for the proper functioning of the gadget that is your mind!  With time, this will become so habitual for your mind that you will not even have to think about doing it, you will automatically switch to peaceful, relaxing thoughts whenever it is needed.

Me

Thank you.  I think this could work!
